DIEGO, May 19, 2016 — The Jacobs Center for Neighborhood Innovation will release its Town Center Master Plan for public review and comment on June 1. The 30-day public comment period will commence with an open house, Wednesday, June 1, 5:30 – 7:30 pm, at the Joe & Vi Jacobs Center’s Celebration Hall (404 Euclid Ave., San Diego, CA 92114). Also, starting June 1, the Master Plan will be available for review and comment online at www.jacobscenter.org/redevelopment. Comments can also be made via email to MasterPlanInfo@JacobsCenter.org, by phone at 619-527-6161, or by regular mail sent to Jacobs Center for Neighborhood Innovation, Re: Town Center Master Plan, 404 Euclid Ave., San Diego, CA 92114. There will also be several additional in-person community engagement opportunities throughout the 30-day comment period, which will be posted at www.jacobscenter.org/redevelopment.
National planning and architecture firm BNIM was hired to create the Town Center Master Plan to inform the future redevelopment of the 37 acres the Jacobs Center owns in Southeastern San Diego’s Diamond Neighborhoods. The Town Center Master Plan will serve as a guide for the organization’s community development work over the next eight to 10 years.
BNIM used past community input to align the Town Center Master Plan with residents’ vision for the area. The Master Plan recommends developments that reinforce the community’s identity, are transit oriented, and support housing, retail, health and wellness, education, and economic opportunity. Additionally, the Master Plan is designed to support sustainability and achieve a LEED ND (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design for Neighborhood Development) certification. The Master Plan also conforms to the recently updated Encanto Community Plan and the City of San Diego’s existing zoning, height, and parking requirements.
“Redevelopment increases safety, creates educational and economic opportunities, and supports health and wellness,” said Reginald Jones, President and CEO of the Jacobs Center. “These are all issues we know the residents of Southeastern San Diego are concerned about. The Town Center Master Plan will help achieve the vibrant and thriving community residents have long envisioned and deserve to live and work in.”
Supporting the realization of the Town Center Master Plan is an approximately $4 million Caltrans Active Transportation Program grant the City of San Diego was awarded in partnership with the Jacobs Center. These funds will be used to improve the infrastructure along the Market Street and Euclid Avenue corridors, including sidewalk and curb repairs, street light installations, traffic signal modifications, landscape and irrigation enhancements, and the creation of pocket parks. Additionally, the Jacobs Center and the City of San Diego have formed a Public Philanthropic Partnership to help streamline and incentivize physical investments on the Jacobs Center’s properties and create opportunities for economic and workforce development in the community.
