JOB SUMMARY

The School of Business Undergraduate Programs Office (UPO) is seeking a full-time Academic Advisor 2. This position will report to the Director of Undergraduate Programs and will be responsible for the day-to-day administration of student programs or service areas through the development, implementation, and coordination of student development programs in the UPO. This role is designed to provide academic advising and counseling to students to support their development through experiential learning while planning for academic excellence. This role will focus on students at the Storrs campus but will engage in activities that impact students at all of UConns campuses.

This role will work within the Undergraduate Programs Offices team, whose mission is to foster a dynamic and inclusive educational environment for holistic student development that empowers current and future students to achieve academic excellence, engage in experiential learning, understand a diverse world, and develop professionalism. The incumbent will advise undergraduate students about academic programs, plans of study, and policies. They will also provide administrative oversight for the coordination and implementation of programs intended to increase student retention and academic success.

The position will be based at the Storrs campus. Occasional in-state or out-of-state travel may be required in support of program activities. Evening and weekend hours will also be required on occasion in support of program activities.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Advising students in personalized curriculum decisions, including the appropriate choice of courses, scheduling of courses, selection or change of major or minor, waiver of requirements/deadlines, and related matters.
  • Attending to the special needs of various unique student populations through the creation and implementation of tailored programs and services, advising, and collaboration with other student-centered offices.
  • Creating plans-of-study to support students in their educational needs, career goals, and professional development.
  • Discussing students status regarding academic warning, probation, or dismissal, and provides recommendations for students who submit appeals.
  • Referring students to other student success services such as Career Services and Counseling and Mental Health Services, as appropriate.
  • Evaluating how services are delivered in their area of focus and recommending plans for improvement.
  • Auditing student records to determine progress toward meeting academic requirements, probationary requirements, and eligibility to graduate.
  • Working with probationary students to develop strategies to improve academic standing. Actively participating in determining the dismissal of students in academic jeopardy.
  • Collaborating with Department Heads, Program Directors, Career Consultants, Global Affairs, and others to plan and implement scheduling and registration activities, orientation programs, and other student academic success activities, as assigned.
  • Serving as a resource for students, faculty, parents and guardians, and others with questions about programs or academic policies.
  • Coordinating and implementing programs to promote recruitment and retention of students, particularly for unique populations such as transfer students, international students, first-year students, and academic warning/probation students.
  • Serving as a liaison between the School of Business and the student support staff on the Storrs campus.
  • Participating in the School of Business administrative processes that include evaluating students for admission and dismissal.
  • Creating, maintaining, and appropriately updating files, records, and student documentation, and assisting in compiling reports.
  • Serving on campus or University committee(s) as assigned.
  • Overseeing departmental programs or initiatives related to advising.
  • Serving as an instructor for the First Year Experience (FYE) or a mentorship course as needed.
  • Performing related work as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelors degree in counseling, education, or a related field and four years of related experience OR masters degree in counseling, education, or a related field and two years of related experience.
  • Proven experience working both independently and in a team environment.
  • Demonstrated experience and competence in counseling students.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office, especially SharePoint, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Demonstrated experience working with freshmen and transfer students.
  • Demonstrated ability to multitask in a high-traffic office.
  • Demonstrated experience taking initiative, working independently and accurately, exercising sound judgment when making decisions, and meeting deadlines.
  • Demonstrated excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills and the ability to build and maintain collaborative relationships with faculty, staff, students, administrators, external agencies/groups, and the public.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Master's degree in counseling, education, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience working with students seeking admission to selective admission programs.
  • Demonstrated experience engaging with constituents in virtual environments.
  • Specific experience supporting undergraduate transfer students.
  • Specific experience supporting undergraduate international students.
  • Previous supervisory experience of student staff.
APPOINTMENT TERMS

The salary range for this position is $64,500 to $68,900, depending on education, qualifications, and experience.
