Job Description – Staff Accountant

PURPOSE OF POSITION & REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

This position is responsible for ensuring the accuracy and integrity of financial processes and compliance. Primary duties include preparing financial statements, performing reconciliations, and supporting the Assistant Controller in day-to-day accounting operations.

REQUIREMENTS (Education, Experience, Skills, Abilities)

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting (required)
  • Solid understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)

Experience

  • 3–5 years of experience in public and/or private accounting
  • At least 2 years of experience in supervising or managing staff
  • Prior experience in construction/plumbing industry operations and managing multiple reporting locations is preferred

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities

  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Excel including VLOOKUP, Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, organized with excellent math skills and 10- key proficiency
  • Must have ability to handle multiple tasks or projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to communicate in a professional manner with all levels of employees along with customers of the company, manufacturers, and vendors

ESSENTIAL COMPONENTS

Responsibilities

  • Prepare journal entries as part of the month-end close
  • Reconcile general ledger accounts on a monthly basis
  • Maintain and ensure the accuracy of general ledger data; collaborate with departments to research and correct discrepancies
  • Oversee enrollment and reporting for Customer CCIP (Contractor Controlled Insurance Program)
  • Maintain accurate records of Fixed Assets and Depreciation; post related journal entries as needed
  • Manage corporate credit card processes, including coding, receipt collection, and payment
  • Ensure accurate inventory pricing by collaborating with Accounts Payable and Purchasing departments
  • Record and reconcile bank transactions
  • Provide support to the Assistant Controller, and others on ad hoc projects
  • Supervise accounting staff, delegate tasks, provide feedback, and support training initiatives

Relationships with Others

  • Works in a supportive and collaborative manner with the Assistant Controller
  • Works with current and prospective customers in a professional manner using the highest ethics possible
  • Demonstrates the ability to interact professionally with other employees of Hallway Plumbing
  • Demonstrates the ability to interact professionally with external contacts such as customers, vendors, and contractors
  • Coordinates with all other employees in a manner that maximizes overall business effectiveness

Physical Demands

  • Works at a desk location for extended periods of time to perform normal daily tasks.
  • Lifts up to 10 pounds from the floor to waist level and able to carry such objects for at least 30 feet
  • Capable of driving to make bank deposits if needed

  • Demonstrates good judgment and reasoning in regard to daily administration of all functions and activities associated with this position.
  • Demonstrate good judgment in regard to providing information and advice to the Assistant Controller in regard to priorities and important issues.
  • Demonstrates good judgment in regard to escalating issues, which are beyond the scope and control of this position in a timely manner.
  • Demonstrates good judgment in respecting the confidentiality of customer and company information.
  • Seeking guidance and direction from appropriate members within the organization as may be required in the performance of responsibilities and duties.

  • Consistently demonstrates the ability to recognize and deal with priorities in a manner related to high level administrative activities and duties.
  • Uses available time during any workday in a wise and productive manner to maximize work efficiency.
  • Spends reasonable additional time beyond normal working hours as may be required to meet project demands.
