Their responsibilities involve maintaining safety, enforcing laws, and coordinating with local law enforcement when necessary.

SPOs in D.C. are authorized under the Code of the District of Columbia to carry out specific police powers on the property they are assigned to protect. This includes making arrests, issuing citations, and detaining individuals pending the arrival of the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD). Special Police Officers must be licensed by the District of Columbia and meet all training and certification requirements.

Key Responsibilities:

Patrol and Surveillance:

Conduct regular patrols of assigned property to ensure the safety of residents, employees, visitors, and assets. Use surveillance equipment and monitor security systems to detect suspicious activities.

Gate/Entry Security:

Duties include verifying identification, checking vehicle permits, maintaining visitor logs, conducting security checks, and patrolling the perimeter. Gate security officers play a critical role in maintaining the safety and security of locations such as residential complexes, corporate offices, industrial sites, government buildings, and event venues.

Law Enforcement and Public Safety:

Enforce laws, ordinances, and regulations within the scope of authority. Respond to and investigate incidents of crime, disorderly conduct, or suspicious behavior on the property.

Emergency Response:

Act as the first responder to emergencies, including medical emergencies, fires, and security breaches. Provide assistance to those in need and alert relevant authorities when necessary.

Arrests and Detentions:

Make lawful arrests and detain individuals suspected of committing crimes on the property, pending transfer to the Metropolitan Police Department. Prepare accurate and detailed incident reports.

Traffic and Access Control:

Regulate and direct traffic flow as needed. Ensure only authorized individuals have access to restricted areas of the property by conducting checks of IDs, badges, or permits.

Conflict Resolution:

Mediate disputes, de-escalate potentially volatile situations, and ensure a safe environment for all individuals within the premises.

Communication :

Maintain open communication with property management, law enforcement agencies, and emergency services. Ensure clear and accurate reporting of incidents and actions taken.

Requirements :

High school diploma or equivalent is required. An associate degree or higher in criminal justice or a related field is preferred but not required.

Licensing and Certification:

Must be licensed as a Special Police Officer by the District of Columbia.

Completion of SPO training and certification (40-hour training program approved by the D.C. government).

Must possess or be able to obtain a valid D.C. Concealed Carry Pistol License (CCPL) if required for the position.

Completion of CPR/First Aid and AED training is required.

Experience :

Previous law enforcement, security, or military experience is preferred, but not required. On-the-job training may be provided for candidates without prior experience.

Skills :

Knowledge of D.C. laws, regulations, and SPO powers.

Ability to remain calm under pressure and respond to emergency situations quickly and effectively.

Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.

Conflict resolution and de-escalation skills.

Basic computer skills for reporting and surveillance system monitoring.

Physical Requirements:

Ability to walk or stand for extended periods.

Must be physically capable of detaining or subduing individuals if necessary.

Ability to lift up to 50 pounds in emergency situations.

Working Conditions:

Shifts: SPOs may be required to work various shifts, including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays, depending on the assignment.

Environment :

Work may be conducted indoors or outdoors, depending on the location. Officers may be stationed in office buildings, government facilities, educational institutions, or residential complexes.
