Leidos’ Defense Systems Mission Assurance is seeking a Quality Engineer to join our Space Systems team in Iuka, MS. Primary responsibilities will be with the Large Solid Rocket Motor (LSRM) program. You will play a critical role in ensuring these solid rocket motors meet all requirements. This position will require the candidate to direct all quality aspects of this new program. The candidate should have knowledge of manufacturing practices. These activities will include but not limited to: Assembly operations / controls, testing, Non-conformances, root cause investigation, internal and 3rd party audits. This position will manage the non-conformances, managing the Quality flow downs to suppliers, inspection instructions. This position will follow up on all internal audit findings to drive the closure of the open issues. This job will audit and ensure all operation steps are being followed per the instructions. Occasional travel could be required to support the program or supplier needs.

Primary Responsibilities.

  • Support 1st shift operations (approximately 8 am – 5 pm) at our assembly facility in Iuka, MS. Overtime or weekend support may be required during critical manufacturing periods.
  • Ensure AS9100 processes are followed and lead the certification of this new facility.
  • Perform program quality planning for solid rocket motor processing, analyze program quality requirements, develop inspection/test procedures and process plans, finalize source inspection checklists, coordinate & review nonconformance documentation, and support root cause/corrective actions & Material Review Boards.
  • Work with engineering and production team members in an interactive and collaborative environment.
  • Provide quality support in an ordnance facility with minimal supervision.
  • Ensure adherence to AS9100, customer, and regulatory requirements across the program.
  • Ensure nonconformances are properly documented and coordinate final dispositions with engineering.
  • Lead risk management, root cause analysis, and corrective/preventive action (RCCA/CAPA) initiatives.
  • Drive First Article Inspections (FAIs), PPAP, and process validations per industry standards.
  • Support Design Reviews, Manufacturing Readiness Reviews (MRRs), and Configuration Control Boards (CCBs).
  • Act as the primary quality representative for the program, ensuring alignment with customer expectations.
  • Lead customer audits, source inspections, and quality reviews.
  • Collaborate with Program Management and Engineering to resolve quality-related challenges.
  • Ensure a focus on Continuous Improvement & Data-Driven Decision Making
  • Utilize metrics and data analysis to identify trends, drive improvements, and reduce defects.
  • Lead process improvement initiatives (e.g., Lean, Six Sigma, Zero Defect initiatives).
  • Champion a culture of quality and accountability within the organization.

Basic Qualifications.

  • Candidate must possess a Bachelor’s degree with 4-8 years of prior relevant work experience or a Master’s degree with 2-6 years of prior relevant work experience. In lieu of degree, High School Diploma/GED and 10 years of experience in quality engineering under an AS9100 system or equivalent experience in DOD or aerospace quality control will be considered
  • 4-8 years of relevant experience performing quality engineering tasks for high-performance systems (e.g. aircraft, launch vehicles, spacecraft, or submarines).
  • Must be knowledgeable of standard inspection and measurement equipment, i.e. micrometers, calipers, multimeters, magnification, black light inspections, etc. 
  • Must be able to read and interpret drawings, assembly schematics, design models, and specifications and prepare hand-written or computer-generated inspection reports.
  • Proficiency in Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T), statistical analysis, and risk management tools (FMEA, PFMEA, DFMEA).
  • Experience working with customer quality representatives, suppliers, and regulatory bodies.
  • Experience with Microsoft Windows & Microsoft Office tools (Word, Excel, Outlook etc.)
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 25 lbs.
  • Must be able to pass an eye exam for visual inspection.
  • Candidate must be a US Citizen and resident of, or willing to relocate to, the Iuka, MS area.

Preferred Qualifications.

  • Knowledge and/or experience working with solid rocket motors or other ordnance devices
  • Experience leading a new facility to be certified to AS9100
  • Demonstrated technical expertise in spacecraft, launch vehicles, high-performance aircraft, or submarine development or operations.
  • Demonstrated experience performing in a collaborative environment working closely with multi-disciplinary teams & sub-tier partners.
  • Experience working with non-conforming material, performing failure analysis, identifying root cause and implementing corrective actions.
  • Experience writing work instructions, procedures, and implementing Quality Management System documentation associated with ISO9001/AS9100.
  • Experience reviewing and interpreting contract quality clauses, requirements, and technical data
  • Certified Quality Engineer, Six Sigma Green/Black Belt, or AS9100 Lead Auditor certification.
  • Experience performing First Article Inspections (FAI) I.A.W. AS9102

Pay Range: Pay Range $72,150.00 - $130,425.00
