Job Description and Duties

Under the general direction of the Staff Services Manager I, and the direct supervision of the Legal Support Supervisor, the incumbent is responsible for critically reading, reviewing, and editing work related to legislative sessions in support of the Office of Legislative Counsel (OLC). The incumbent performs as a knowledge expert in the use of the English language, word usage, word division, syntax, spelling, pronunciation, and punctuation, as well as proofreading procedures, symbols and terminology of OLC style, grammar, and syntax. The incumbent also works independently or in a team environment proofreading, either visually or using electronic comparison software, a variety of legislative documents to ensure accurate spelling, grammar, and conformity to the office style. The incumbent identifies and resolves inconsistencies and other problems in documents, advises attorneys on technical drafting aspects, evaluates logical flow and readability of documents for nontechnical readers, reviews text for logic and expression in addition to typographical and grammatical errors, and trains other staff on proofreading procedures and processes. The work hours for these positions will be 10:00 am to 7:00 pm, Monday through Friday, though the shift may extend until all work is completed and/or the legislative session has ended. Weekday, weekend, and holiday overtime is mandatory and essential during peak workload periods. Peak workload periods generally fall within the legislative cycle, which is January through September; therefore, the incumbents must be willing to work up to 7 days a week.   • Knowledge of the OLC and the legislative processes
  • Knowledge of the OLC’s form, style, and construction for the various types of documents prepared by OLC attorneys and legal support staff
  • Demonstrated utilization of neat, legible handwriting to accurately identify and mark errors and diplomatically query unclear text
  • Demonstrated flexibility and adaptability as required by fluctuating workload demands
  • Demonstrated acceptance of increasing responsibility

Your Responsibilities:

  • Critically read, review, and edit legislative draft proposals prepared by OLC attorneys
  • Perform research and advise attorneys on technical drafting, including code structure and sequencing
  • Review, edit, and electronically proof various publications
  • Read and scan various legal documents visually, as well as through the use of electronic comparison software
  • Identify possible usage problems in drafting, editing, and typing
  • Analyze measures for conflicts and draft conflict amendments
  • Act as backup to the Legal Support Supervisor, and provide training for new and existing staff
  • Other duties as needed
