Your Role:

At MilliporeSigma, we are seeking a highly skilled Machine Learning Engineer - Hybrid in Rockville, MD to join our dynamic Omics and Machine Learning team within the Research & Development department at our Rockville, Maryland facility. In this pivotal role, you will design, optimize, develop, and implement a range of machine learning applications tailored to the full range of genomics service offerings. These services broadly span the biologics product biosafety and pharmacogenomics fields. Your creativity will help us find innovative, sustainable machine learning solutions while maintaining compliance with regulations and ensuring the scalability of our operations.

Scope of Responsibility:

Your primary responsibilities will include developing and validating machine learning models, as well as performing computational data analysis, to support a variety of multi-omics testing services (e.g., metagenomics, RNA-seq, proteomics). You will liaise closely with management, end users (e.g., Scientists/Study Management), support staff and internal teams as required to understand needs and requirements. You will serve as a technical lead on projects as assigned and will work collaboratively to advance the application of Next Generation Sequencing and machine learning in the field of biosafety testing.

• Serve as the technical lead for machine learning model development and validation
• Independently initiate, direct, and execute machine learning development strategies to support a panel of omics-based service offerings
• Communicate timelines, development, and related needs as well as bottlenecks to management
• Maintain complete and comprehensive records for study/data analysis integrity
• Critically analyze complex data. Interpret and integrate experimental results with project objectives
• Contribute ideas and suggestions to improve analysis techniques and improve protocols and processes. Investigate, create and develop new methods and technologies for project advancement
• Prepare technical reports, standard operating procedures, and risk assessments
• Maintain up-to-date knowledge and train to new skills upon needs
• Prepare and present (internally and externally) scientific data, abstracts, papers, posters, etc., to advance the reputation of Life Science Services/BioReliance within the marketplace
• Responsible for assay/method/process validation ensuring assays/methods/processes are maintained in a validated state within area of expertise
• Comply with all company safety regulations and procedures
• Train new hires and internal/external colleagues on various machine learning concepts, analysis procedures, open source/in-house developed applications, commercial software, and analysis platforms

Who You Are

Minimum Qualifications:

• PhD in Data Science, Machine Learning, Bioinformatics, Computer Science, Software Engineering or Statistics

-OR-

• Master’s Degree in Data Science, Machine Learning, Bioinformatics, Computer Science, Software Engineering or Statistics with 1+ years of industry experience

-OR-

• Bachelor’s Degree in Data Science, Machine Learning, Bioinformatics, Computer Science, Software Engineering or Statistics with 3+ years of industry experience

-AND-

• 2+ years experience using Python

Preferred Qualifications:

• Proficiency in language R or Java and software version control, like Git and BitBucket as well as working on multiple OS platforms, including Linux
• Experience with supervised and unsupervised learning algorithms, such as decision trees, support vector machines, and clustering methods
• Experience with frameworks like TensorFlow, Keras, or PyTorch for building and training neural networks
• Experience with data cleaning, normalization, and transformation techniques to prepare data for analysis
• Experience with machine learning model evaluation and explainable AI (SHAP, Giskard, LIME)
• Understanding of data structures, algorithms, and software architecture
• Experience in handling next-generation sequencing data
• Familiarity with cloud platforms like AWS or Google Cloud
• Excellent time management skills (generation and adherence to timelines)
• Excellent organizational skills, including the ability to efficiently evaluate, prioritize and handle multiple dynamic projects and priorities
• Multi-tasker who can handle multiple high-complexity projects at one time
• Function effectively in highly collaborative as well as independent fashions
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills that have been demonstrated through presentations/seminars, implementation of new services, etc.

Pay Range for this position - $81,800 - $146,500

Our ranges are derived from several sources, and largely reliant on relevant industry market data. Should we decide to make an offer, we will consider several factors, including but not limited to your location, skills, experience, career level, and other job-related factors. This role may also be eligible for short-term or long-term incentive compensation, including, but not limited to, cash bonuses.
