What You Will Do The High Performance Computing (HPC) Division provides production high performance computing systems services to the Laboratory. Our work starts with the early phases of acquisition, development, and production readiness of HPC platforms, and continues through the maintenance and operation of these systems and the facilities in which they are housed. HPC Division also manages the network, parallel file systems, storage, and visualization infrastructure associated with the HPC platforms. The Division directly supports the Laboratory's HPC user base and aids, at multiple levels, in the effective use of HPC resources to generate science. Additionally, we support selected research activities that we deem important to our mission.
The High Performance Computing Operations Group (HPC-OPS) of the High Performance Computing Division has the main responsibility of providing operational duties that span the HPC Division. There are several teams within the group that take responsibility for the broad range of HPC platforms for a large and diverse customer base: HPC TechOps, HPC Platforms, HPC Facilities team, and HPC logistics. We provide support and services to many production platforms at a world-class computing facility to ensure customers can accomplish their research and mission at extreme scale.
HPC-OPS is seeking a highly organized, self-motivated, and a proficient multi-tasker with a strong desire and capacity to learn to join our team as a Data Center Specialist 2 or 3 level. The selected candidate should have a background with electrical systems in addition to having a comprehensive understanding and wide application of operational activities and systems related to the operation and maintenance of High Performance Computing (HPC) Data Centers. This includes the operation of existing data centers; involvement in the planning and determination of both design specifications and performance requirements of new or upgraded state-of-the-art data centers that will serve the growing needs of the Laboratory for modeling and simulation; safety/authorization/compliance basis; health, safety and environmental management; security; quality assurance and work control; equipment engineering; maintenance management; waste management; inventory control, materials purchasing, and packaging/ shipping/receiving activities; and document control/records management. This position will be filled at either the DCS 2/DCS 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
HPC Data Center Specialist 2 ($92,300 - $151,000) - Assist with the electrical needs of the data centers; make recommendations for electrical system upgrades and modifications; and assist with the implementation of those modifications. Independent judgment and latitude should be used throughout these processes/tasks. Assist in the management of data centers which house the Laboratory's HPC infrastructure and supercomputing systems for the Advanced Simulation and Computing and the Institutional Computing programs.
- Assists in performing periodic reviews and assessments to ensure facility systems are operating properly and are being maintained within required limits.
- Work under guidance of more senior personnel while supporting data center electrical and mechanical systems.
- Assist with the analysis and issue resolution in regard to power and cooling systems serving HPC systems.
- Respond to facility emergencies both during normal work hours and outside of regular business hours.
- Coordinate equipment shutdowns, upgrades, return to service, and/or installations.
- Monitor and perform operation of electrical and mechanical equipment supporting the facility and its critical operations.
- Assist with the preparation and/or review of lock-out/tag-out plans that ensure specific instructions for the isolation, containment, and/or de-energization of various mechanical and electrical sources according to established procedures and facility guidelines.
- Perform duties consistent with LANL's commitment to a secure, safe and healthy work environment.
- Work occasional weekends, holidays, and overtime as required and be "on call" on a rotational schedule of 24 x 7 basis.
- Perform basic maintenance tasks to the highest caliber, which includes climbing ladders, work in confined spaces, lift heavy objects weighing up to 50 lbs., etc.
HPC Data Center Specialist 3($101,700 - $168,200) In addition to the duties outlined above, the HPC Data Center Specialist 3 will be required to:
- Investigate electrical and mechanical needs of the data centers; make recommendations for electrical and mechanical system upgrades and modifications; and assist with the implementation of those modifications. Independent judgment and latitude should be used throughout these processes/tasks.
- Monitor the electrical and mechanical load and prepare forecasts of future loads to ensure that building systems are adequate, reliable and meet projected computational load requirements.
- Provide input associated with the supercomputer request for purchasing (RFP) process.
- Provide direction for lock-out/tag-out plans to ensure specific instructions for the isolation, containment, and/or de-energization of various electrical and mechanical sources according to established procedures and facility guidelines.
- Develop optimal solutions to unique or complex problems with conflicting goals and objectives.
What You Need Minimum Job Requirements: Technical: - License or Certification to perform work on electrical equipment.
- Demonstrated proficiency in accurately and efficiently diagnosing and repairing electrical issues on multiple systems.
- Familiarity performing work on mechanical systems.
- Demonstrated ability to use cutting edge software and technology, along with a variety of hand tools.
- Experience installing, repairing and operating electrical equipment, such as double ended substations, and VFD's.
- Ability to assist with programmatic and facility outage planning.
- Ability to draft electrical procedures.
On-call - Participate in on call-out rotation and respond to emergency maintenance and operations calls.
Leadership - Must work well under pressure and deadline commitments and have proven history of ability to work independently and as a constructive member of a team.
Communication - Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Experience collaborating with all levels of organizations (i.e. operations personnel and supervisors, engineering and management staff and outside contractors).
- Proficiency in reading and interpreting documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
- Experience creating procedures for other specialists within the team.
- Ability to read, understand and follow blueprints, one-line diagrams and schematics.
- Familiarity with office productivity software such as MS Word and Excel as well as computerized machine control platforms.
Security Clearance - Ability to obtain a Q clearance.
Additional Minimum Job Requirements for HPC Data Center Specialist 3 Technical: - Extensive knowledge and understanding of electrical and/or mechanical systems.
- Extensive knowledge and experience operating and maintaining electrical systems within a data center setting.
- Extensive knowledge and experience of new technologies and comprehensive mechanical and/or electrical diagnostic and analytical skills.
- Familiarity with various electrical and/or mechanical documents, blueprints and schematics.
Education/Experience at a lower level: Position requires a minumum of 5 years of related experience or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Education/Experience at high level: Position requires a minimum 8 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Desired Qualifications: - Familiarity with classified environments and systems.
- Ability to perform Electrical Safety Officer (ESO) duties
- Ability to work on multiple projects at a time.
- Familiarity with facility monitoring systems (Environet, FMS, etc.) .
- Certification in electrical and/or mechanical HVAC

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level).
