Summary

The Head Start Coach will contribute to 4-C?s commitment to high-quality professional development by
providing on-site mentoring and coaching to Head Start and Early Head Start child care center leadership
and educators. The Head Start Coach is responsible for serving as the coaching lead for one or more
centers in the Head Start program. The Head Start Coach will ensure full implementation of Reggio
Inspired Practices into all aspects of the Head Start program?s early learning system in alignment with
policies/procedures to support all children to achieve School Readiness Goals. The Head Start Coach will
also provide ongoing mentoring or intensive coaching to full-time education staff to support them in
successfully fulfilling certain aspects of their role, including but not limited to effective practices in the
following:

  • CLASS? Teacher-Child Interactions
  • Learning Environments
  • Curriculum
  • Meeting all children?s needs
  • Professional Growth and Collaboration

Duties

Effective Head Start Coaches must be able to build relationships with other staff based on mutual
respect, demonstrate effective communication skills, practice conflict resolution skills, have an ongoing
commitment to learning, possess good observation skills, and model best practices working with young
children. The Head Start Coach is primarily responsible for achieving the following outcomes for the
Head Start/Early Start program:

EDUCATION

  • Support the effective implementation of Reggio-inspired practices into education services while ensuring alignment with all relevant policies and procedures.
  • Review group lesson plans, to ensure alignment with Reggio and Creative curriculum.
  • Work with educators to implement program curriculum with fidelity.
  • Work with educators to implement child assessment systems reliably, including understanding
  • child outcomes data and using them to plan and individualize next steps.
COACHING AND MENTORING

  • Provide educators with coaching and/or mentoring support for quality improvement and professional growth through regular observation and formal and informal feedback.
  • Implement Practice Based Coaching with fidelity and follow all relevant policies.
  • Support educators in understanding child outcomes data and how to use it to improve practice.
  • Support the training of newly hired educators on specified education topics (in conjunction with the Center Director and Grant Recipient staff).
COMMUNICATION & SERVICE COORDINATION

  • Participate in regular team meetings to ensure effective communication and service coordination.
  • Attend local, state, and regional initiatives to grow and develop professionally.
  • Review the work of the people you coach.
  • Instruct, train and work effectively with people from a variety of backgrounds and with differing levels/areas of training. Model best practices within the service area.
RECORD KEEPING & REPORTING

  • Collect, maintain, and report records related to mentoring in the centers.
  • Collect, maintain, and report on intensive coaching through Practice-based coaching.
  • Complete and report on any classroom observations including but not limited to, CLASS, Curriculum Fidelity, Pyramid Model, and other tools.
  • Collect and input all ASQ- 3 and ASQ SE data according to policies.
ONGOING MONITORING & SELF ASSESSMENT

  • Review weekly MBI (managing by information) reports and ensure all concerns related to our scope are addressed promptly.
  • Review quarterly and annual child outcomes data and oversee educator planning to help all children make developmental gains.
PROGRAM GOVERNANCE & LEADERSHIP

  • Participate in annual and quarterly planning to set, plan for, and monitor coaching/mentoring goals.
  • Provide input, when asked, in making decisions that support program quality and maintain program accountability.
  • Promote the consistent exchange of information and a cooperative environment within the leadership of the center.

Requirements

Requirements:

  • Bachelor?s Degree in Early Childhood Education OR Bachelor?s degree in a related field with at least six (6) courses in early childhood education and experience teaching preschool-aged
  • children OR state-awarded preschool teaching certification with experience teaching preschool-aged children; Master?s degree preferred.
  • Previous experience teaching in an early childhood setting; experience with supervision, management or coaching preferred
  • Experience managing an infant/toddler or preschool program
  • Certification in CPR and First Aid
  • Routine Physical exams and background checks
  • Travel required locally or long-distance up to 10% of the time for work-related meetings and functions.
  • Must have a valid driver?s license and reliable transportation.
  • Hold or obtain KY Trainer?s credential
  • Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
  • Bilingual in Spanish and English preferred
  • Knowledge with the inclusion of children with disabilities preferred
  • Knowledge of infant/toddler health and safety licensing requirements
  • Ability to interact effectively with people from diverse backgrounds
  • Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing
  • Demonstrated computer literacy skills, using MS Office applications and other basic data systems including internet navigation
  • Must be honest, dependable and able to meet deadlines
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently
Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to sit most of the time with some bending and reaching
  • Ability to stand, walk, and bend periodically
  • Ability to engage in repetitive movement of wrists, hands, and fingers ? typing and/or writing.
  • Ability to work frequently at close visual range (i.e. preparing and analyzing data and figures, computer terminal, extensive reading)
  • Ability to receive and respond to oral communication
  • Able to lift a child weighing up to 50 pounds
Work Environment:

  • Work is generally performed in an office environment and child care center.
  • The noise level in the work environment is moderate to occasionally loud (examples: business office with computers and printers, light to moderate traffic, human voices).
  • May be required to operate a motor vehicle during course of duties.
