General Job Duties:
  • Performs general duty police work to protect the life and property of Newberry citizens through the enforcement of laws and ordinances.
  • Work involves patrolling the City, conducting investigations, preparing court cases, preparing various reports, and assisting citizens in an attempt to protect the life and property of citizens through the enforcement of laws and ordinances. The employee works under stressful, high-risk conditions.
Minimum Training and Experience Required:

Be a Citizen of the United States.

Be at least twenty-one (21) years of age.

Pass a physical examination post-offer of employment.

Meet the essential physical fitness standards necessary for the performance of duties.

Must be a high school graduate or equivalent.

Successfully pass a State and Department aptitude test.

Successfully pass a psychological screening.

Successfully pass a pre-employment polygraph examination.

Pass a credit check. Applicant must have a good credit rating as determined by a credit report from a Credit Reporting Agency.

Pass an extensive background investigation which includes past or present domestic situations, i.e.: Child Support, Orders of Protection, Restraining Orders, etc.

Pass Criminal history check and fingerprint check.

Successfully complete the prescribed Police Officer Basic Training Requirements as required by the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy.

Must possess a valid South Carolina driver's license combined with a satisfactory 10-year driving record.

Entry Level Uncertified Officer - Salary Non-Exempt Pay

R ange: $42, 395 up to $45,890 ~ commensurate with education and military experience

Full-time employees have many benefit options including employers paying 98% of individual health insurance premiums and 100% of basic life, basic LTD and basic dental premiums. As an employee, you would be a member of the SC PORS Retirement system contributing 9.75% with an employer 21.24% match, accrue paid sick leave and vacation from date of hire, have the option to enroll in a deferred compensation plan, and be eligible to take part in the City's Wellness program.

Fringe Benefits:
  • 11 holidays per year + 1 annual floating holiday
  • Two weeks of paid parental leave.
  • Accrue 1 sick day per month, starting from the date of hire. Rollover up to 18 weeks annually.
  • From the date of hire, accrue two weeks of vacation time annually up to two years of service; at two years of service, accruals increase to three weeks; at 15 years of service, accruals increase to four weeks. Rollover up to eight weeks of annually.
