Position Summary
The Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum, part of the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts at Washington University in St. Louis, seeks a dynamic, self-motivated individual to serve as the Associate Educator for School and Teacher Programs. Founded in 1881, the Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum is a nationally accredited university art museum that serves as a center of cultural and intellectual life on campus and in St. Louis. With some 8,700 artworks in its collection, the Museum has especially strong holdings in 19th-, 20th-, and 21st-century American and European art and a growing collection of global art. Its mission is to collect significant modern and contemporary art and preserve its collection for current and future generations; provide excellence in art historical research, exhibition, and object-based learning; and engage the campus population, its visitors and alumni, the St. Louis region, and the global art community.

The Associate Educator is responsible for organizing and administering PreK-12 school and teacher programs, including but not limited to overseeing outreach regional schools and developing and leading curriculum-based tours, teacher workshops, and learning resources. The Associate Educator works with the Head of Learning & Engagement on the Student Educator Program, managing communications, scheduling, and coordinating recruitment, trainings, and payments. This person is an engaging and inclusive educator who is skilled in educational program design to draw connections between artwork and classroom learning. This role reports to the Head of Learning & Engagement.

Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Develops and manages strategy for PreK-12 school and teacher programs to build partnerships with regional schools through outreach, tours, and workshops that highlight the permanent collection and special exhibitions.
  • Manages the Student Educator Program, including recruitment, training, and scheduling tours and payments.
  • Under the direction of the Head of Learning & Engagement, write curriculum-specific and developmentally-appropriate print and digital learning resources for permanent collection works and special exhibitions.
  • Collaborates on public programs by maintaining internal and external communications, event registration, and coordination as needed.
  • Conducts program evaluation and support Marketing and Communications to expand the Museum's visibility among diverse constituencies by tracking and compiling education department statistics, including numbers of programs and workshops and numbers of participants, to be used for Museum records and grant purposes.
  • Maintains education-related website pages with information about programs and tours and learning resources.
  • Performs education department administrative duties as needed.
Working Conditions
  • Ability to lead tours around the museum.
  • Evening and weekend hours as required.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Four (4) years working in a university art museum education department or arts organization.
  • Proven experience with PreK-12 school and teacher educational program development and knowledge of PreK-12 curriculum and lesson planning.
  • Familiarity with St. Louis PreK-12 schools and Missouri Learning Standards.
  • Excellent teaching, organizational, communication, and writing skills.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaborate with a range of individuals, including PreK-12 schools and teachers, University faculty and students, museum professionals, and service providers.
  • Excellent public speaking skills and the ability to engage with a wide spectrum of Museum tour participants.
  • Basic design skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to values of diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion.
Required Qualifications

MA in Art History, Museum Studies or related field. Three (3) years working in an art museum education department or related work experience. Previous experience teaching and experience developing and leading tours to all audiences.

Salary Range
$23.37 - $36.19 / Hourly

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
