Residents Driving Change : Community Vision and Voice : The Youth Movement

Writerz Blok

Writerz Blok began as a positive approach to graffiti prevention and has grown into something much bigger — education and opportunity through graphic design, hiphop dance, and disc jockey training, as well as a youth aerosol art business and training center.

Writerz Blok is a vibrant outdoor revolving art gallery, covered with approximately 13,000 sq. ft. of aerosol art and murals created by neighborhood youth. The site is run by volunteers and staff members coordinating services and activities for as many as 250 youth a week, ranging in age from elementary school to young adults.

Writerz Blok holds training workshops in graphic arts and mural design. Each workshop involves classes held over a four-month span. The graphic art participants master the basics of computer art and translating hand sketches into computer images. The muralism students learn new techniques in aerosol art and design. Some are hired by local muralists. The staff also teaches muralism classes at local high schools.

Writerz Blok is open daily at 12 p.m. To learn more, call 619-263-4914.
