Residents Driving Change : Community Vision and Voice

The Youth Movement

The future and sustainability of the work in The Village at Market Creek lies in the hands of the next generation. Developing youth leadership and voice in the Village is happening now through The Youth Voice Moment. "The Movement" was established by community youth to create a positive counter-culture of young people addressing the critical issues faced by their peers.

Led by the Southeastern Teen Center, Writerz Blok, and the International Outreach Team, the Youth Voice Movement involves more than 50 young people from seven high schools. As a team, "The Movement" has two main focuses: education and health. The Education track is currently involved in "The Love of Reading" Campaign — a group of youth who read to students at local elementary schools and libraries. The health track is currently pursuing "30 Days to a Healthy Life" — 200 youth who are participating in a health and nutrition assessment and tracking their progress and what they are learning on videos posted to YouTube.

We believe in the potential of residents to change their own neighborhoods.
