North Encanto
Encanto, which means “Enchantment” in Spanish, was given its name by Alice Klauber in 1889. Today it is two distinct communities. North Encanto is bounded on the north by Mallard Street, on the south by Akins Avenue, on the east by the city of Lemon Grove, and on the west by 60th Street. Imperial Avenue runs between the two communities. Encanto is home to the Encanto Cultural Fair, which annually brings thousands of people together to celebrate family, community, and culture. Beautiful art paintings adorn the landscaped median from 63rd to 68th Streets.

“This is a special place, like a little lost community. You don’t really know about it until you happen upon it. Streets just run in different directions. We don’t even have sidewalks, which is actually something we’re trying to change with our community group (the North Encanto Lunch Bunchers). Residents are very neighborly and respectful. When people need assistance, they’re always there. Before I moved here, I was lucky to know my neighbors on either side or across the street. Here, everyone knows everyone. I could not have picked a better community in which to live.”
